Today is the tenth anniversary of the first Sand Machine show. Jay, Jeremy, our good friend Scott Ryans manning the bass, and myself had made music as Tongues of Fire and The Hearde prior to this in various forms. But this was something different. This was Sand Machine.
The show was an interesting one. It was at an indoor/outdoor bar called the Krazy Klam on Old Orchard Beach in Maine. Some of the clientele at such venues can be challenging as it is, but to add to our experience this happened to be Biker Week (there was a multiple party fight right in front of Jay). Also at this point we were not a seasoned 40-to-50-songs-in-the-bag kind of band, and we had something like four hours to fill in the afternoon into evening. To make matters more interesting, Jeremy couldn't make the gig till halfway through. We were scraping. See Oldies 101. Someone at the Krazy Klam recognized Jay and I from playing basketball against us in college and rewarded us by requesting "Dixie Chicken" (which we didn't know) about 30 times.
All told a positive memory for me, however. Around the same time we had begun work on our debut CD It Goes With Anything which would be released that October. The first show did feature most, if not all, of the songs on that album. The Krazy Klam closed and was torn down a few years ago so we outlasted them.
I'd like to send out a huge note of gratitude to everyone who has stuck with us from the beginning... and there are quite a few of you. But I think I can speak for Jay, Jeremy, and Noah in saying that whenever you latched on in the decade we are extremely grateful for your support over the years. To another ten....

Wow, 10 years....
I saw you guys play a few shows as Tongues of Fire and The Hearde, but I didn't finally "latch on" until I saw you as Sand Machine in early 2003, I think. It was TT the Bear's Place. I believe this was Rizzi's first show as well. You guys are awesome! Listening to your music and getting to know all of you has been a great experience for me. You've opened my ears to so much great music, and I've had so many great nights, both at shows and just hanging out. Keep on keepin' on.....for at least 10 more years...
Thanks Tim
Thanks for the good words. It's been great to have your support and musical input - definitely not a one-way street.
I ditto what Dave said...regarding that first show, I recall a rendition of "In My Life" that made even the ocean blush...despite that we definitely had them by the end. A semi-auspicious beginning.
Long Time
I hearde you and wore a Tongues t-shirt. I even painted a sand-machine backdrop for the gig you did at my church back in 1999 or 2000. Could it really be that long ago? I'm anxious to hear the new CD. You guys are such a breath of fresh air.
I'm afraid it was....
that long ago. According to my records the show in Rhode Island was on December 4th, 1999. Not to mention the old LaFargeville shows! Good to hear from you and thanks so much for the kind words. We'll have to get a CD in your hands.
